We all think we would
Have been the good guys in that story,
That we would have refused fascism’s demands,
We think we would have had the foresight,
The readiness to do the unpopular,
Until it happens on one’s own soil,
And then one is left in one of a few camps,
Those that acquiesce,
Those that refuse,
And those that just don’t know what to do,
What to do when humans are contained like cattle
With the label illegal,
What to do when realities of an angry mother Earth means this was no fault of their own,
What to do when being a good citizen conflicts with being a good person,
What to do when the question “what do I do?” is real
and not a hypothetical “what would I do?”
But rather ”what will I do?”

What Comes Next
We are cutting
Ties to our siblings,
Because imaginary lines
Dictate whose lives we should value,
Whose skin should get in,
What we should allow authorities in power to do to them,
This is the slippery slope,
That leads to the unspeakable deeds,
That leads to giving up souls,
For the sake of peace of mind via apathy,
And here we stand,
Where others before us swore we would never again go,
But here we are,
And all hands are red,
As we shuffle aimlessly wondering
What to do,
Trying to remember
What comes next.
Plastic Soldiers
These were never
Your children to worry of,
Never your siblings to protect,
You have seen lives
As a petulant child,
Narcissism blinds your mind,
These were always just toy soldiers,
Cheap plastic to be used,
Abused
Put in harm’s way,
To show off to other children
“Mine is bigger, is better than yours”,
You were always the playground bully,
Burying toy soldiers in the sand,
In the dirt,
But you are just a child,
And they are toys,
No one was really,
actually,
yet
hurt
Collar
*Ode to Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Mountains rest on petite shoulders
Made sinewy by the weight,
Made agile by the struggle
of holding truth and judgement
To the test,
Strength in wielding gavel,
Dissent is not a dirty word,
for the aged that has heard and seen
And ruled on far more challenges,
Keeping Lady liberty in shape
A collar replaces a hero’s cape
Ward malignancies at Bay,
Teeth might gnash
And bones might break
But a tall shadow
Does a small but fierce figure make
Down Came the Rain
November 10, 2018
And down came the rain
Down on
Everyone;
And
On the men,
On the boys
In trenches,
Waist deep
In death,
For country,
For Honor,
Only to find
No honor
In this new age bloodshed,
As down came the reign
Blood and mud,
Waste and rain,
Toxins,
Bullets,
Bombs,
And down came the rain
Up,
Attack,
Shield,
Shoot,
Kill,
maim,
be maimed,
And down came the rain
Repeat,
Up,
Attack,
And even while down,
Down,
Down
Down
Came the rain.
